September 7 - The European commission has given France an extended a deadline (October 29th 2007) for it to revise its online gambling legislation to allow European online gambling operators access to the French Internet gaming market.
The European commission is targeting France's online gambling legislation to address two issues, one, governmental measures to control the Internet, and two, concerns involving the free market within the European Union.
Currently France has only two government approved gambling operators, PMU and Fran?se des Jeux, which critics are accusing of being a monopoly.
The European Commission asked France to revise its online gambling law before the end of August 2007 that would require all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to post warning messages that users were about to enter a website unauthorized in France.
The Commission also asked the French government to make its horseracing market available to European gambling operators, or answer to a European Court of Justice for violating article 49 of the European Treaty.
