The Best Hold 'Em Games OnlineWe are is proud to present the fourth part of our series on the easiest hold 'em games online; a guide for the serious and competent poker player. This week we examine Pacific Poker. If you've missed any of our previous articles, be sure to read them, or you could be losing out on where to find those precious, invaluable fish.
Pacific Poker is owned by Casino-On-Net, and is their showcase for online multiplayer poker. As a result many players tend to be inexperienced as they come in via the casino website. This is a similar scenario to several other poker rooms that are also attached to large online casinos. Players can often use their same account and it is convenient for them to try their hand at poker. They frequently find themselves out of their depth playing against real people, and that's where you come in and swallow them whole.
Pacific Poker has slow software but makes up for this with excellent customer support and a commitment to provide higher limit games, which also helps. After all, it does you little good to find fish at the 0.50/1.00 level, but a full game at 10/20 can make that Christmas bonus seem altogether negligible.
There is a 25% sign-up bonus for new accounts on Pacific Poker. The bonus is good up to a maximum of $100 ($400 initial deposit gets you the $100 in bonus cash) and to earn a bonus dollar you need to wager twenty dollars in live games. Not a bad deal at all as far as we are concerned.
They also offer the following incentives and promotions:
Bonus Points: For every $10 you wager on raked hands you earn a bonus point. When you earn a 100 bonus points that translates into $1 cash back. Kind of like frequent flyer miles at a poker table (where motion is kept to an absolute minimum, ironically enough).
Relay Race: This is a promotion that rewards a lot of action. The top 4 players during a 6-hour time period who accumulate the most bonus points will earn $200. The next 10 will earn $100. The next 36 will earn $50. And the final 50 will earn $20.
Showdown Survivor: The Showdown Survivor Series rewards bad play even more than the Relay Race does. For every showdown you see, you get a point. (2 points in Omaha and Stud.) The minimum limit for this is $.50-$1. Obviously if you end up in many showdowns the chances are you will likely lose more than $100. The top 50 get $100, 1st place -- $2500, 2nd -- $1250, 3rd -- $650, 4th -- $400, and 5th -- $200.
The PCP All-Comers Open Tournament: There are 3 2-hour rounds at limits $2/$4, $4/$8, and $6/$12. For each round, the players who win the most money receive cash prizes. A solid winning player, for the limit being played, playing his or her normal game during this event should have an equal chance at placing in each of the top 20 prize-paying positions. If you feel like you can comfortably beat the $6/$12 at Pacific Poker (it should after all play just like a cross between the $5/$10 and $8/$16) then it is certainly worth your while to play in this event.
Pacific Poker is a medium-sized site but they tend to have larger limit games going, and these are populated by weaker players than the big sites. This makes it an attractive place to join for the serious poker player, and we recommend opening an account there right away (before all the pros find out and beat you out of those gigantic pots). One word of warning: while the customer service is very friendly and swift they tend not to know a lot about the complexities of poker (or poker-related complaints for that matter) so if you do have a serious issue with them you could have a slight problem getting it resolved. But they are helpful and will do their best, which is more than can be said for some places (Paradise Poker springs to mind for some strange reason).
